The Hungarian tourism and hospitality sector is currently short of workforce becuase of increased employee migration to other countries abroad and as people are switching to other professions, according to Attila Bándoli, vice president of the National Association of Tourism and Hospitality Employers (Turisztikai és Vendéglátó Munkaadók Országos Szövetsége - Vimosz).

The sector would need about 400,000 new employees in total, Bándoli said at a meeting about the current labour market situation during the Utazás tourism fair in Budapest last week. He said labour shortages in the tourism and hospitality industry are not temporary.

About 73% of various tasks and work flows in hospitality could be automated, but human workforce will be needed in he future, he said. Bándoli added that the current state of domestic vocational education is not rosy at all, with the number of hospitality students decreasing. And many of these students lack basic capabilities, which makes switching to another profession very likely later.

The reputation of the industry should be improved and vocational and higher education should be reformed, according to Vimosz. The association also urges the restructuring of the current dual education model, the expansion of traineeship opportunities and strengthening the role of higher education.
