The government's Kisfaludy Program has attracted huge interest from local accommodation providers, said Zoltan Guller, chief executive of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (Magyar Turisztikai Ügynökség – MTÜ).

Industry players and developers have so far submitted 580 applications for non-refundable subsidies with a total value of Ft 21 billion. More than 200 applicants are seeking subsidies to build new guesthouses or hotels, Guller said.

The deadline for new applications has been extended to 14 March from 15 January. Eligible companies can currently apply for subsidies of Ft5-60 million to upgrade already operating guesthouses in the countries.

Non-refundable financial support is also available for the construction of new hotels and guesthouses at Lake Balaton and in the Sopron-Fertő, Tokaj, Upper-Tisza and Nyírség regions.
