The long-planned construction of a new big convention center in Budapest would re-position the Hungarian capital among the most popular locations for major events, according to Tamás Flesch, vice president of the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants (MSZÉSZ).

A new convention center could also help hotels in Budapest to further increase average room prices, Flesch told business daily Világgazdaság in an interview. He is also co-owner and managing director of domestic hotel management company Continental Group.

Flesch said the capital is currently ranked 16th among top congress destinations, even "without a real product". Opening a new facility would help Budapest become one of the top three destinations in this segment, he said.

Many domestic hotels managed to repeat last summer's outstanding performance this year, especially in August, according to Flesch.

"Budapest is closing a very good season", he said, adding that growth was strong even with a more than 15% increase in average room prices compared to two years ago.
