The government is considering teaming up with a private investor to open a new hotel at the 19th century Wenckheim mansion at Szabadkígyós, near the Romanian border, according to ministry commissioner Zsolt Virág.

The possible hotel could be located on the upper floor of the historic building, Zsolt Virág said. He didn't say whether negotiations have already started with potential investors.

The government is planning to spend more than Ft 2 billion to upgrade the building, originally built for the Wenckheim family in 1875-79.

Planned works will include the reconstruction of the ground floor and upgrading the facade and the roof, Zsolt Virág said.

The mansion received about 18,000 visitors last year, which may double or  triple after the reconstruction is completed in 2020, the ministry commissioner added.
