The government has modified the concept of the long-planned convention center in Budapest, according to a new government decree published on 12 October.

The government now envisions building an event facility of similar proportions near the existing Müpa cultural complex instead of the previously planned convention center, the decree said.

It said the new facility would have a capacity of 3,000-4,000 people and its construction "would take into account operational synergies with Müpa".

The future event center would have multiple functions, while the previously planned convention center would have had a primary function of housing large congresses. The government reached an agreement about the convention center with the main tourism industry organisations following a series of negotiations.

According to earlier plans, the convention center would have also featured a plenary room with a capacity for 4,100 delegates. Domestic company Finta Studió completed the architectural design of this building two years ago and a construction permit was issued last year.

Plans about building a large convention center in the Hungarian capital first emerged more than 18 years ago.

Tourism industry groupings have been long urging the development of a new convention center so that Budapest would remain a competitive location for congresses and local hotels could benefit from guest nights generated by bigger events in the city.
