The annual number of guest nights spent in Hungary is estimated to reach a record-breaking 31 million in 2018, Zoltán Guller, chief executive at the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) said before Christmas.

The hotel and hospitality sector is expected to see its best ever holiday season during Christmas and New Year's Eve, Guller said.

"The data show that an increasing number of tourists arrive in Hungary and more and more Hungarians travel within the country," he said.

Actual annual data on the number of guest nights and the overall tourism sector are scheduled to be published in early 2019.

Combined revenues of the tourism sector has doubled and the number of tourists rose by 51% in 2010-17, according to Guller. He said that a 10% increase in tourism revenues raises Hungary's overall GDP by 1%.
