The four-star Oxigén Hotel Family & Spa Hotel in Noszvaj has started hiring employees from the neighbouring Kárpátalja region of Ukraine to ease labour shortages, delegates heard at the regional session of Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants (MSZÉSZ).

The 50-room Noszvaj hotel offers accommodation for its Ukrainian employees, participants heard at the regional MSZÉSZ meeting. Hiring employees from abroad could possibly ease the labour shortages many hotels have been facing.

Accommodation providers in the country's northern region closed a very successful summer season this year in terms of occupancy and revenue, but average profitability has remained very low due to increased operation costs, participants said. One of the biggest problems is the lack of qualified labour.

Hotels in Eger generated 19% of guest nights in the northern region, totaling 1.18 million in January-August, while units in Miskolc accounted for another 16%, MSZÉSZ secretary Attila Lukács said at the event. Domestic guests generated slightly more than 1 million nights in the region in the first eight months of the year.
