The Industrial Body of Hungarian Hospitality Services Providers (Magyar Vendéglátók Ipartestülete - MVI) is proposing to officially classify the waiter and cook occupations as 'professions in demand' to aide students in vocational education and ultimately ease current labour shortages in the sector.

MVI has requested the Budapest Chamber of Commerce to add the waiter and cook occupations to the official list of 'professions in demand', published annually in a government decree.

Including these two occupations in the list would allow best-performing students in vocational schools to receive a monthly stipend of Ft 10,000-50,000.

Hospitality services providers expect that the stipend could make the profession of waiters and cooks more attractive to vocational students.

The hospitality sector has been facing extreme labour shortages, partially as Hungarian waiters and cooks increasingly migrate to foreign countries, mostly in western Europe, for better-paying jobs.
