Hungary is going to start developments of Ft 10 billion in total this year at the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Hollokő, Pannonhalma and Lake Fertő, according to Zoltan Guller, chief executive of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (Magyar Turisztikai Ügynökség – MTÜ).

This year will also see the completion of currently ongoing upgrades at Szigliget castle and the beginning of a Ft 3 billion project at Hortobágy, which is expected to become the region's leading attraction.

Also on the agenda is the reconstruction of ten adventure parks at Lake Balaton for Ft 1.2 billion and the development of tourism at Esztergom for Ft 12 billion. Tourism subsidies will be distributed to ten wineries.

Further plans include the integration of 70 viewpoints at Lake Balaton into a network, upgrading beaches at Lake Tisza and at the Danube Bend north of Budapest. The construction of a special bridge with a transparent bottom will start at Sátoraljaújhely.

Guller also said that a proposal will be drawn up to the government to select three new priority regions for tourism in the country: the agglomeration ring around Budapest, the Szeged-Makó region in the southeast and the Mátra-Bükk region in the north. Currently, there are five priority regions for tourism in Hungary.
