Tourism was once again one of the key sectors driving GDP growth in Hungary in the first quarter of this year, according to government officials and the Central Statistics Office.

The country's GDP increased by 4.4% in average in January-March from a year earlier, the statistics office said. It said the services sector, especially retail and tourism, contributed to economic growth a great deal.

Economy minister Mihály Varga said the tourism sector have had double-digit growth for the past several years, which also impacted the country's overall economic performance.

The direct contribution of tourism to Hungary's GDP will increase by 3% to about Ft 937.8 billion this year from Ft 910.2 billion, or 2.4% of GDP, last year, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) estimated in April.
