The István Dobó Castle Museum in Eger was the most visited museum in the countryside last year and came in third place on the overall national top list after the Hungarian National Gallery and the Buda Castle Matthias Church Ecclesiastical Art Collection in Budapest.

The castle museum and its related displays received about 405,000 visitors combined last year, more than any other exhibition in the countryside, Eger mayor László Habis said, citing data from the statistics office. The castle casemates had 160,000 visitors alone.

Planned new developments at the Eger castle include the reconstruction of the Zárkándy bastion for more than Ft 500 million until the end of this year, upgrading a display on medieval penitentiaries and adding a new exhibition about medieval kitchens.
