Castles are the second most popular destinations for domestic visitors after thermal baths and spas, business daily Világgazdaság said, citing the results of a recent survey by accommodation portal szallas.hu.
The most popular castles include ones in Szigliget, Visegrád, Diósgyőr, Gyula and Eger. The latter two destinations also offer thermal baths and spas, which makes them particularly attractive to domestic tourists.
Entrance tickets to castles are relatively low, currently ranging between Ft 1,000 and Ft 1,700, which explains high visitor numbers, the report said.
The Szigliget castle, for example, receives more than 150,000 visitors a year, while the historic castle in Kőszeg attracts about 60,000 tourists annually. Eger remains one of the most popular destinations for school trips.
